French Early 18th Century Cherry and Walnut Wedding Armoire from Brittany

A French Louis XV period cherry and walnut wedding armoire from Brittany from the early 18th century. This French armoire was born in the 1730s in Brittany, one of the prettiest areas of France, located on the Atlantic coast. This piece is a witness of a French tradition, which was to offer armoires as wedding gifts, as demonstrated by the carved hearts, placed under the pierced bonnet-shaped cornice and on the skirt. The upper cabinet is made of two doors, opening to reveal shelves and inner drawers. Each door is adorned with slightly raised panels and delicate carving reminiscent of lace, a great 'bretonne' tradition. The lower section of the armoire features two dovetailed drawers, flanking a central carved motif. The scalloped skirt is decorated with a fluted frieze, highlighting the presence of another carved heart. Reminding us of a time when furniture was more than just functional, when it was a symbol of character and family, this French 18th century armoire from Brittany will bring a rich presence to any bedroom or living room.
