SOLD - 19th Century Scottish Orkney Chair with Handwoven Straw Back and Zigzag Patterns

An authentic 19th century Orkney chair with zigzag-patterned handwoven straw back from the Island of Orkney near the Northern tip of Scotland. This armchair features a wooden armature supporting a curved back, reminiscent of wingback chairs, handwoven with straw. Lovely pierced zigzag motifs decorate the upper section. Two straight open arms rest on the framed rush seat. The ensemble is raised on a simple yet elegant wooden base, made of straight legs in the front, splayed in the back and connected to one another with side stretchers. Produced in the 1800s-early 1900s, these stylistically very recognizable chairs were meant to protect the sitter from the cold winds of the North Sea. The grand simplicity and originality of the shape and material, will allow this 19th century Orkney chair to bring an authentic touch to any home.
