SOLD - Swedish 1790s Gustavian Period Painted Wood Upholstered Sofa with Fluted Legs

This Swedish period Gustavian painted wood sofa from the late 18th century features a slightly slanted linen upholstered back with a delicately carved crest with partially upholstered scrolled arms and deep upholstered seat. The ensemble is raised on six fluted and tapered legs, adorned at the knees with rosettes, typical of the Louis XVI rosettes, a style which greatly influenced the Gustavian period. Painted in a soft palette typical of the taste and its need for pastel tones to help bring more light into the Swedish interiors, the sofa epitomizes the neoclassical elegance. The décor is limited to discreet motifs, placed on the crest, knees and along the upper and lower rails. Placed anywhere is a home, perhaps in a living room or bedroom, this Swedish Gustavian sofa, circa 1790 would bring a charming presence.
