Sold Swedish 1790s Gustavian Four-Drawer Painted Wood Commode with Reeded Motifs

Sold A Swedish period Gustavian four-drawer painted commode from the late 18th century with original lock and hardware. This Swedish Gustavian chest features the typical vocabulary from the Gustavian period. Born in the 1790s, the commode is made of a rectangular raised top sitting above a dentil molding. The Gustavian period, which was predominantly influenced by the Louis XVI era, shows no intricate carving, but rather clean lines accented by reeded motifs. And indeed, the four dovetailed drawers (the top one being smaller than the three lower ones) are elegantly reeded on the totality of their surface. This chest is adorned with its original locks and hardware. The original back has been replaced. The paint, made with a soft palette, typical of the Scandinavian taste, may be later although there is no evidence of an under coat or previous color. Placed anywhere in a home, from a bedroom to a living room, this Swedish 1790s commode will be a charming addition to any décor.
