SOLD - Petite French 1800s Neoclassical Painted Three-Drawer Chest from Aix-en-provence

A petite French neoclassical Provençale white painted three-drawer commode from the early 19th century. Born in the early 1800s in the Southern French city of Aix-en-Provence, particularly dear to Cézanne (think the Mountain Sainte-Victoire) this French commode features a simple rectangular top sitting above three hand-cut dovetailed drawers with bail handles. In an unusual manner, each drawer is adorned with a charming incision of different shape, surrounding a central escutcheon. The upper drawer shows a motif reminiscent of a quadrilobe, the middle one an oval, while the lower one is adorned with a heart. The fluted side posts create a lovely vertical accentuation, balancing the horizontality of the piece perfectly. The sides are simply adorned with recessed panels. With its beautifully aged light color finish, complementing the clean lines of the elegant silhouette, this French Neoclassical chest-of-drawers from 1800s Provence will bring a discreet elegance to any home.
