French Realist Oil on Canvas Cow Painting Signed by Théodore Levigne, circa 1880

A French realist oil on canvas painting of cows in a pastoral setting by artist Théodore Levigne (1848-1912) of the School of Lyon. This medium size oil on canvas painting was created in the late 19th century by Théodore Levigne, a French artist born in Central France, who studied both in Lyon and Paris. Adopting a classical diagonal composition, the talented artist depicted two cows in the foreground, peacefully resting on the banks of what is possibly an arm of one of France's rivers, perhaps the Loire or the Rhône. The landscape, with its discreet hills in the background, is typical of the Massif Central area. The white cow in the center of the composition, is standing and alert. Both animals are looking at a scene invisible to us, located to our right. The color palette is subtle, made mostly of green, blue, white and black tones. The artist chose a simple subject and gave it all its importance, treating it with great realism. Levigne has many works displayed in French museums. With its delicate poetry and precise technique, this French oil on canvas painting circa 1880 will bring a charming touch to any home. Set inside an elegant gilded frame, the piece is signed lower right.
