SOLD - An unusual pair of French walnut Louis XIV style armchairs from the mid-19th century, with tall backs, scrolled arms, new upholstery and richly carved base showing a Louis XVI influence. Each of this pair of French fauteuils features a tall slanted back, flanked by two tall arms, finely carved with acanthus leaf motifs and decorated with S-scroll supports in their extremities. Each armchair is raised on a richly carved base, made of four legs connected to one another with scrolled side stretchers, in a manner typical of the Louis XIV period. The decorative vocabulary however, borrows from the Louis XVI period as well. Each skirt is carved with a guilloche frieze on three sides, accented in its center with a Louis XVI knot that connects a swag to the corner of the legs. The front legs are adorned with delicate floral motifs and raised on lion paw feet. The back legs, less important, are simply straight. With their great proportions, unusual style and great patina, this pair of French walnut armchairs circa 1860 will be an excellent addition to any living room, bedroom or library.
