A French wooden farinerio decorative box from the late 19th century with carved floral motifs on sliding door. Created in France during the last quarter of the 19th century, this petite box, called a fariniero, was intended to be used to coat fish, particularly sardines, with flour (farine means flour in French) before frying it. Presenting an arching carved crest, the box is adorned on the façade with a cross-hatched wicker basket on scrolling feet decorated with a bouquet of flowers delicately hand carved on the sliding door. The box's lower section is decorated with a horizontal floral motif that provides a perfect conclusion to the ensemble. The side panels are left bare except for their dovetails and the back is, of course, unfinished. With its small proportions and lovely carved wooden décor, this French farinerio box circa 1890s will make for a lovely decorative addition to any room, particularly a kitchen, perhaps hung above a side table.
