SOLD - An English Turn of the Century armillary sphere from the early 20th century with Ionic style stone pedestal and rustic character. Created in England during the Turn of the Century which saw the transition from the 19th to the 20th, this armillary showcases a circular sphere with nicely weathered appearance, resting on an elegant Classical style stone base made of a fluted column with scrolling motifs, typical of the Ionic order. The first creation of armillary spheres goes back to ancient China during the 4th century BC and ancient Greece during the 3rd century BC, with later uses in the Islamic world and Medieval Europe. The piece's dimensions are as follows: the sphere is 29.5" Diameter and the ensemble measures 64.25"H. The base on its own is 17.5"W x 17.5"D x 29.5"H. With its Classical influence and nicely weathered patina, this English armillary sphere circa 1900 will make for a great decorative addition to any home!.
