SOLD - A pair of French large size terracotta Biot olive jars from Provence with yellow glaze from the early 19th century. Created in the Provençale town of Biot in Southern France during the early years of the 19th century, each of this pair of terracotta olive jars features a recognizable ovoid shape. Boasting a nicely weathered patina revealing their age and great use, the jars are adorned with a yellow glaze on the neck and lip, while some blue highlights accentuate the ensemble.
These jars were made in Biot, a town famous for its ceramics and glassblowing. The area of Biot was donated by the Count of Provence to the Knights Templar in the 13th century. For some time after the French Revolution however, the town was taken over by pirates and thieves, but returned to prosperity in the 15th century. In the 16th century, villagers quickly enriched themselves with farming and pottery. The olive jars like ours were traditionally made to transport olive oil in the 17th and 18th centuries. With their large size and aged appearance, this pair of Biot jars circa 1800 will make for an excellent decorative accent in any home, used indoors or outdoors, perhaps as planters.
