A Swedish period Gustavian breakfront painted four-drawer commode from the late 18th century. This Swedish Gustavian chest features a rectangular top with canted corners in the front, sitting above a breakfront façade. The four hand-cut dovetailed drawers, are adorned with a unified motif, reminiscent of a niche. The upper drawer receives the most décor. Its central oval escutcheon is indeed topped with a delicate dentil motif, typical of the Gustavian era, and is flanked with delicate volutes. This recessed movement is reprised on the three lower drawers. The canted side posts in the front are also adorned with an exquisite décor, made of carved medallions in the upper section, and fluted motifs below. The commode is raised on four bracket feet. With its soft colored paint finish, typical of the Scandinavian taste for a pale color palette, and its elegant Gustavian lines, this Swedish 1780s commode will bring a graceful presence to any room, from a bedroom to a living room.
