18th Century Gustavian Period Commode in Black Paint, circa 1780

An authentic late 18th-century Swedish Gustavian period commode, circa 1780, featuring its original structure with a later black-painted finish. This striking piece showcases the elegant simplicity characteristic of Gustavian design, clean lines, restrained ornamentation, and balanced proportions. The commode offers four drawers: two smaller top drawers over two full-width lower ones, each framed by subtle molding. The shaped apron and tapered legs add a touch of neoclassical lightness, while vertical fluting on the side columns echoes traditional architectural motifs. The hardware, ring pulls and key escutcheons, are later additions but suit the bold character of the updated finish. The black paint has been lightly distressed to reveal glimpses of the original wood beneath, creating a beautifully worn, time-softened patina. Solidly constructed and full of personality, this commode bridges history and modern styling, making it a standout piece for refined interiors.
