A Swedish grey painted sideboard, circa 1830. The rectangular top with rounded front corners sits above a façade organized around a central drawer flanked by recessed panels, with two doors below providing enclosed storage. The piece is raised on petite turned feet. The grey painted finish is characteristic of the Swedish taste of the early nineteenth century, when painted furniture — often in soft grey, blue-grey, or off-white — was produced throughout Sweden for interiors from modest farmhouses to provincial manor houses. The paint has developed the honest wear and surface character that comes with nearly two centuries of use, the wood visible beneath the finish at points of natural attrition. A clean-lined and well-proportioned example of Swedish painted furniture from the early Gustavian and post-Gustavian period. 63.25"W × 20.12"D × 39.25"H.
