A monumental French solid walnut bookcase, late nineteenth century. The architectural scale and ambition of the piece is established by detached columns carved with vertical fluting and surmounted by acanthus-leaf capitals — a detail associated with the grand bibliothèque format produced by French ébénistes for country houses and institutional libraries of the period. The upper section is fitted with three glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves on rack systems, allowing the configuration to be varied for books of different formats. The lower section is articulated with paneled details that provide visual weight and structural balance. A molded cornice crowns the composition above; a shaped plinth base anchors it below. The walnut has developed a deep, warm patina consistent with age. 89"W × 25.75"D × 97.125"H.
