A French Louis XIV community buffet in walnut, Burgundy, first half of the eighteenth century. Modest, sober pieces of this type were made for religious communities, hospices, and charitable institutions — the Hospices de Beaune being the most celebrated example — where practical, well-constructed furniture was required without the ornamental ambition of domestic pieces. The two molded mitered doors are each carved with a central hexagonal panel with double-band molding presented within a square field — restrained, geometric ornament suited to an institutional setting. The two-board walnut top is in very good original condition with a well-profiled edge. The sides carry chamfered rectangular moldings; all original backs are intact. The piece rests on loaf feet at the front with square rear feet. A preventive xylophene treatment has been carried out. The walnut has developed a beautiful, warm blonde patina. An unusual and historically interesting example of French provincial institutional furniture.
