This exceptionally rare Provençal duchesse brisée, or two-part armchair, dates to the Louis XVI period of the 18th century and exemplifies refined regional French craftsmanship. Constructed in solid walnut, the piece is composed of two gondola-shaped armchairs designed to be used together as a duchesse or separately as armchairs. The backs are finely carved with stylized olive branches, a distinctive Provençal motif symbolizing peace and abundance. Elegant nailhead trim outlines the upholstery, enhancing the sculptural profile of the frames. The front legs are straight and sheathed, while the rear legs are saber-shaped, reflecting the transition toward neoclassical balance and restraint. The upholstery is period-appropriate and shows gentle wear consistent with age. Minor old restorations are visible at the tops of the feet, typical of an authentic piece of this period. A rare and highly decorative seating form with strong architectural presence.
