A French painted wood planter, 1890s. The square body is finished in soft green and decorated on each face with a hand-painted pastoral landscape scene contained within a ribbon-tied medallion — a form of ornament characteristic of the late nineteenth-century taste for naturalistic, picturesque imagery. The planter is elevated on four canted tapering legs that give it an elegant, elevated posture. A tin liner is retained, rendering the piece fully functional for planting. The combination of pastoral imagery, green ground, and canted legs places this piece in the tradition of decorative French garden furniture of the Belle Époque period. Suited to indoor use or a covered outdoor setting.
