Matched Set of Ten Swedish 18th Century Gustavian Painted Chairs from Lindome
This matched set of ten Gustavian chairs was made in Sweden in the eighteenth century at Lindome, a region known for its furniture production. The chairs are an unusual survival as a matched set of ten, and have been repainted and newly upholstered in linen, leaving them ready for use. The Gustavian style, the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism, is expressed in the restrained lines and balanced proportions of the chairs. The repainted frames provide a uniform decorative surface, while the fresh linen upholstery offers a neutral, practical seat cover. As a set of ten, the chairs suit a dining table seating eight to ten, where a matched group of this size is difficult to assemble. The Lindome origin adds regional interest. Their restrained Gustavian character allows them to work within both period and plainer modern dining rooms, and a complete set of this size is comparatively rare.
