Italian Solid Walnut Lyre-Base Table, 19th Century
An Italian table in solid walnut, 19th century, raised on boldly carved lyre-form end supports joined by shaped iron stretchers, in the great tradition of the Tuscan fratino table. The generous top, its edge worked in the distinctive owl's beak profile, glows with a deep waxed patina that displays the walnut's figure beautifully. The sculptural lyre base gives the table unusual presence viewed from any angle, while the iron tie-bars add both stability and a graphic, almost modern note. At five and a half feet long it serves as a writing table, console, or intimate dining table, equally at home in period and contemporary rooms. Sound and sturdy, with wear consistent with age and use.
