Dating to the nineteenth century, this child's Orkney chair follows the traditional form of the Orkney Islands of Scotland, in which a wooden frame is fitted with a high, curved back of woven straw. Scaled for a child, this example reproduces the distinctive construction of the full-size Orkney chair in miniature. The woven straw back, a defining feature of the type, curves to give shelter and was traditionally worked from locally available materials. The wooden seat and frame support the straw back. As a child's chair, it is both a functional seat and a decorative object of folk-craft interest. Suited to display in a sitting room, hall, or child's room, the chair carries the appeal of traditional vernacular craftsmanship. Its small scale and distinctive woven back make it a characterful piece, valued by collectors of Orkney furniture and traditional country craft.
