Made in France in the nineteenth century, this monastery table is constructed in solid walnut with four twisted legs joined by a stretcher. The monastery, or refectory, table is a long dining form descended from communal tables, and the twisted, or barley-twist, legs give this example a decorative, sculptural support. Solid walnut provides a warm, hard-wearing surface and substantial weight. The stretcher braces the legs and adds to the table's stability. Suited to use as a dining or large work table, the table seats several diners and serves as a central piece in a dining room or kitchen. Its solid walnut construction and twisted legs give it both durability and decorative character. Suited to both traditional and plainer modern interiors, the table combines a generous working surface with the warmth of walnut. As a French walnut monastery table, it offers a substantial dining surface with strong period character.
