Made in Sweden around 1810, this Gustavian daybed is worked in the Turkish taste that became fashionable in Scandinavia at the close of the eighteenth century. Daybeds of this kind were originally dressed with fabric across the front to suggest a Turkish divan. The frame has been repainted in a light grey, in keeping with the muted Gustavian palette, and newly covered in linen, leaving it ready for use as seating or a reclining bench. The proportions are long and low, suited to placement against a wall in a drawing room, bedroom, or library, or at the foot of a bed. Construction follows the painted softwood method typical of Swedish furniture of the era. The light grey surface and linen upholstery give a calm, neutral appearance. As a Gustavian daybed in the Turkish style, it offers period seating with the restrained, light character of Swedish furniture.
