Milan North Station, Oil on Panel, Luigi Rossi (1852-1923)

Luigi Rossi (Cassarate, March 10, 1852 – Tesserete, August 6, 1923) was a Swiss-Italian painter. Oil painting on panel, signed on the lower right. Titled on the back: Milan North Station. He trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Giuseppe Bertini. He made his debut in 1871, inaugurating a repertoire of genre scenes marked by subtle social criticism, which became a prominent trait of his production. His Ticino origins prevented him from receiving the prestigious Prince Umberto prize in 1878, which was reserved for citizens of the Kingdom of Italy. During the 1880s, his repertoire diversified, adding mountain landscapes painted en plein air, scenes of rural life, and portraits. From 1885 to 1888, he was in Paris, where he also engaged in intense illustration work for Alphonse Daudet and Pierre Loti, in particular. Upon his return to Milan, he came into contact with the poet Gian Pietro Lucini; an encounter that marked a turning point in his pictorial research. This resulted in some of his most famous canvases, still with a solid verist imprint, but updated toward new Symbolist trends. He constantly participated in the main Italian and international exhibitions with paintings and watercolors. In 1921, he set up a solo show at the Galleria Pesaro in Milan. Upon his death, he was commemorated with two posthumous exhibitions held at the Società Permanente in Milan and at Villa Ciani in Lugano in 1924.
