A period Gustavian tall case clock, Swedish, circa 1820, with carved wood decoration and its original paint recovered by careful scraping. Standing over seven feet tall, the clock carries the sculptural crest and softly shaped case of the late Gustavian period. Its most remarkable feature is the dial, inscribed with a sobering memento mori in Latin: 'IN UNA EX HISHE HORIS MORERIS', one of these hours will be your last, a rare and evocative survival of the period's meditations on time. The scraped surface shows the chalky, authentic color that collectors of Swedish painted furniture prize above all. A tall case clock with this combination of surface, carving, and story is a genuine rarity. Wear is consistent with age.
