A very unusual freestanding Karl Johan bench, Swedish, circa 1830, repainted in black and newly covered in linen. The backless form rises to gracefully scrolled ends, and unlike the typical Swedish bench built to stand against a wall, this example is finished on all sides, opening genuinely flexible placement: at the foot of a bed, backing a sofa, centered in a large hall, or beneath a window. At 55.5 inches wide the seat accommodates two comfortably. The black painted frame gives the piece graphic strength against the fresh natural linen, and the scrolled silhouette reads beautifully from every angle. Freestanding period benches rarely come to market. Wear is consistent with age and use.
