Retour d'Egypte Cherrywood Commode with Sphinx Mounts, Italy, circa 1800
An Italian Retour d'Egypte chest of drawers, circa 1800, made entirely of solid cherry wood. The linear, sober case typical of the period presents a smaller drawer beneath the top over two large drawers, the front flanked by ebonized wood pilasters dressed with gilt sphinx-form mounts, the Egyptian taste that swept Europe after Napoleon's campaigns. Gently canted sides and truncated pyramidal feet carry the architectural discipline through, and the top is a single expanse of solid cherry whose warm color has deepened with age. It brings real neoclassical character to a bedroom, hallway, or study. The drawers run properly and the case stands sound, with wear consistent with age and use.
