Austrian Green Painted Pine Buffet with Lozenge Doors, circa 1880
An unusual Austrian buffet in green painted pine, circa 1880, the two doors decorated with bold applied lozenge moldings that give the facade its strong graphic rhythm, flanked by fluted canted corners above shaped bracket feet. The green paint has worn softly at the edges and moldings, showing the honest surface that collectors of painted country furniture prize. Compact and low, it offers generous enclosed storage while serving as a media cabinet, a hall cupboard, or a sideboard in a breakfast room. Painted Alpine pieces with this much personality are increasingly hard to find. The doors close properly and the case stands sound, with wear consistent with age and use.
