A Swedish late Gustavian painted buffet, circa 1820. The slightly raised rectangular top sits above two doors carved with reeded diamond motifs — a distinctly Gustavian decorative device in which the diamond lozenge, overlaid with reeding, creates a restrained geometric surface ornament characteristic of the late phase of the Swedish Neoclassical tradition. Petite rosettes provide additional accent. The interior is fitted with shelves and two upper drawers. The painted grey finish has developed an honest distressed character consistent with more than two centuries of use, the abraded surface carrying the gentle patina that distinguishes period Swedish painted furniture from later painted pieces. A refined and well-detailed example of the late Gustavian style at its most characteristic. 49.5"W × 21.5"D × 45.5"H.
