A Swedish Gustavian painted pine sideboard, circa 1790. The serpentine front is one of the more sophisticated forms associated with late Gustavian cabinetmaking, in which the curved façade — drawn from French and English Neoclassical prototypes — was interpreted in painted softwood with characteristic Scandinavian clarity. The piece is organized with two central paneled doors flanked by curved side doors with fluted detailing, the whole opening to adjustable shelved interiors. Two upper drawers are fitted with delicate escutcheons and brass pulls. A raised back gallery crowns the top. The painted finish is in a soft, distressed white tone — the light palette fundamental to the Gustavian aesthetic of brightening Nordic interiors. An accomplished and well-detailed example of Swedish late-eighteenth-century Neoclassical furniture. 52.4"W × 21.5"D × 40.9"H.
