A nineteenth-century French cast iron Neoclassical urn with fluted body, garland decoration, and paw feet. The body is articulated with fluting and enriched with carved garlands of flowers and foliage — ornament derived from the classical vocabulary that characterized the finest French Neoclassical production. The dramatic scroll handles sweep upward with cascading floral motifs, adding baroque energy to the otherwise disciplined form. The urn rests on a sturdy base supported by four modeled paw feet, a detail of considerable heraldic presence. The weathered cast iron surface has developed a richly patinated finish over more than a century of use. A distinguished and imposing single piece.
