An avenue of poplars in full summer leaf, oil on canvas, signed Sohn at lower right and dated 1905 on the reverse, attributed to the German modernist painter Alfred Sohn-Rethel (1875 to 1958). Sohn-Rethel came from a remarkable dynasty of painters reaching back to his grandfather Alfred Rethel, and this luminous lane, with its long, well-mastered shadows and Barbizon-flavored calm, shows the family gift for landscape. The pale trunks march into the distance between meadow and mountains, drawing the eye down the sunlit path. A peaceful, beautifully resolved picture for a bedroom, study, or landing. The canvas is in good order, with wear consistent with age.
