Biedermeier Lacquered Chest of Drawers, Vienna, circa 1830
A Biedermeier chest of drawers from Vienna, circa 1830, in a rare lacquered finish of deep anthracite grey. Furniture of this period and region was typically made in walnut, cherry, or mahogany, which makes darker lacquered examples like this one genuinely uncommon. The case presents three long drawers with small knobs beneath a molded top, finished with a gently shaped apron, in the clean, architectural lines that give Biedermeier furniture its enduringly modern character. The dark surface has worn softly at the edges, adding depth rather than distraction. Equally at home in a bedroom, hallway, or study, it sits as comfortably beside contemporary pieces as period ones. The drawers run properly, with wear consistent with age and use.
