Bornholm Clock from the Island Between Denmark and Sweden, Early 1800s

This early-19th-century Bornholm longcase clock reflects the architectural clarity and understated character associated with the island traditions that formed between Denmark and Sweden. Its tall, narrow silhouette, subtle moldings, and gently worn painted surface reveal over two centuries of honest use. The original face—with classical numerals and brass details—remains intact, and the finish retains the quiet patina expected of an untouched regional example.

Inside the case, the clock preserves a handwritten Swedish poem left by a former owner. The note reads:

    “Klockan, min gamla hedersvän,
så långt jag minns har du troget gått,
år för år i samma lugna takt
    på vaket att timslag slå.
    Kanske snart vi skiljas,
mitt verk är slutat och detta en gång skall bli.
Därför man skall du timslag slå
    för Sigvard, Dorit och de…”

“Clock, my old and honorable friend, for as long as I can remember you have faithfully gone, year after year in the same quiet rhythm, keeping watch and striking the hour. Perhaps soon we will part; my work is ending and so it must be. Therefore may you continue to strike your hours for Sigvard, Dorit, and the others…”

Few Bornholm clocks preserve such personal documentation. This example stands as both a functional timepiece and a rare historical witness, carrying the passage of time in both mechanism and memory.
