A Dutch ebonized wood jardinière, 1840s. The circular tapering body is encircled by turned spindle-shaped supports — a decorative element that animates the form while reinforcing the structure. A brass liner with a large carrying handle is fitted within, rendering the piece fully functional for potted plants or floral arrangements. The whole is raised on a small pedestal with ball feet. The ebonized finish, fashionable in the Netherlands and throughout Northern Europe during the Biedermeier and early Victorian periods, gives the piece a graphic, architectural presence. A refined and compact interior planter equally suited to a living room, hallway, or writing desk.
