A Bolognese walnut sideboard, early eighteenth century. The two paneled doors are decorated with geometric insets and bold turned roundels, framed by carved pilasters and surmounted by a molded dentil cornice — an architectural program that reflects the Baroque influence characteristic of northern Italian furniture of the period, where case pieces were conceived with the formal authority of interior architecture. The interior reveals two full-length shelves; the solid plank back and original iron hinges confirm the authenticity of the construction. The well-worn interior surfaces speak to long domestic use. The piece is raised on bracket feet. Bologna was a significant center of northern Italian cabinetmaking, and sideboards of this quality and scale from the region are comparative rarities in the market. The walnut carries a warm, aged patina of considerable depth. 62"W × 21.5"D × 51.75"H.
