A pair of English Victorian brass andirons, circa 1860, in the Neoclassical style. Each andiron is composed of a large fire urn set atop a fluted column, the shaft adorned with swag motifs in the Adam manner, with a smaller urn on a slender subsidiary column accented by a ribbon tie. The warm golden tone of the brass has mellowed with age, softening the crispness of the cast and chased ornament. Neoclassical andirons of this form draw on the influence of Robert Adam and his circle, a tradition that persisted through the Victorian period in high-quality English fireplace furnishings. A handsome pair in excellent decorative order. Offered as a pair.
