English circa 1880 Pair of Louis XVI-Style Lead Planters
A pair of English lead planters in the Louis XVI style, circa 1880. Cast lead was widely used in late Victorian England for garden ornament, prized for its ability to take fine decorative detail and its durability in outdoor conditions. These planters are designed in the Neoclassical manner associated with Louis XVI — likely featuring fluted or gadrooned bodies, swag or ribbon ornament, and restrained classical profiles consistent with the period revival. Lead develops a soft silver-grey patina over decades of weathering, and examples from the 1880s carry an established surface depth that cannot be replicated. Both planters are structurally sound.
