English Late 19th Century Sundial with Carved Limestone and Bronze Top
An English late nineteenth-century sundial of carved limestone and bronze, 1880s. The obelisk-shaped limestone base is set on a pyramidal plinth, each face of the shaft carved with gable-like triangular motifs enclosing œil-de-bœuf openings — a Gothic-inflected detail that lends a picturesque quality to the otherwise classical form. The cut-off top is carved with falling volutes that frame the transition to the bronze sundial element: a circular disc engraved with Roman numerals and a central compass rose (rose des vents), upon which the gnomon is mounted. The weathered limestone and aged bronze have developed a complementary patina well suited to a garden or terrace setting.
