A French Louis XV walnut buffet, circa 1750. The rectangular planked top with rounded edges sits above a two-door façade, each door adorned with a star inlay and carved panel ornament — an unusual combination of marquetry and carved detail characteristic of regional French workshops where individual craftsmen exercised inventive variations on the prevailing Rococo vocabulary. The doors open to inner shelves. A carved shell accent appears on the apron, the most emblematic motif of the Louis XV style, and the piece is raised on four legs with front cabrioles. The walnut, a wood closely associated with mid-eighteenth century French provincial cabinetmaking, has developed a deep amber-brown patina over more than two centuries. A refined and well-detailed example of the Louis XV buffet tradition. 64.5"W × 25"D × 45.5"H.
