A French Louis XV walnut buffet à deux-corps from the Loire Valley, circa 1750. The chapeau de gendarme bonnet top — the distinctive arched and pitched pediment associated with Loire Valley armoires and buffets à deux-corps — crowns the upper section, which presents two arched doors carved with delicate scrolling floral ornament opening to serpentine inner shelves. The lower section, deeper in proportion, shows two smaller doors topped by petite dovetailed drawers accented with large rosette escutcheons. The piece is raised on scrolled front feet and straight rear feet connected by a scalloped apron on three sides. The chapeau de gendarme top and the floral carved arched doors are among the most celebrated features of Loire Valley cabinetmaking — a tradition that produced some of the finest provincial Rococo furniture in eighteenth-century France. The walnut patina is warm and well-developed. 58.75"W × 22.25"D × 99.5"H.
