A large eighteenth-century French Biot jar from Provence, in terracotta with a yellow glazed lip and green drip glaze. The Biot jar — produced in the pottery workshops of Biot, near Antibes in the Alpes-Maritimes — was the quintessential storage vessel of Provence for centuries, used to hold olive oil, wine, and preserved foods. This example presents the characteristic large-scale terracotta body with reddish surface markings and the distinctive yellow-and-green glaze combination of the regional tradition. The heavy walls and broad form speak to the jar's original utilitarian purpose, now transformed into a compelling decorative object of genuine eighteenth-century antiquity.
