French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Painted Marquise Armchair
Made in France in the nineteenth century, this Louis XVI style marquise is constructed in molded wood and retains its original paint. A marquise is a wide armchair, broad enough to seat one person comfortably or two closely, and the form here follows the neoclassical lines of the Louis XVI style. The molded wooden frame carries the restrained carved detailing typical of the style, and the original painted surface gives the piece an aged, settled character valued in period French seat furniture.
