French Louis XV Period 1770s Walnut Buffet with Drawers, Carved Doors and Skirt
A French Louis XV walnut buffet, circa 1770. The two upper drawers with refined hardware sit above two carved doors, the central panel of each door adorned with a linenfold motif — an unusual and distinguished detail that references the earlier French Gothic and Renaissance vocabulary while appearing in a Rococo context, suggesting a piece made for a client of antiquarian taste. The carved skirt below and scrolling feet at the front are quintessential Louis XV features. The doors open to inner shelves. The walnut has developed a warm, rich patina consistent with its age.
