French Marquetry Gueridon Games Table with Reversible Chessboard Top
A French marquetry gueridon games table, its round removable top reversing from a marquetry face to an inlaid chessboard, with a baize surface beneath for cards. A single locking drawer sits in the chevron-veneered frieze, and the whole rises on square tapered legs finished in brass toes. Games tables of this ingenuity were made to move about the salon, serving as a lamp or side table by day and a chess or card table by night, and this one keeps every part of that double life intact. The marquetry has mellowed to a warm honeyed glow. The drawer locks properly and the top lifts and reverses as intended, with wear consistent with age and use.
