French Provincial Painted Buffet in Blue Grey, circa 1820
A French provincial buffet, circa 1820, in soft blue grey paint, with two drawers over two shaped panel doors, finished with a gently scalloped apron and scrolled feet. Original iron escutcheons and hinges punctuate the painted surface, and traces of earlier ochre show through at the moldings, giving the buffet the layered, time-softened color that makes early painted furniture so alive. The apron carries delicate carved decoration at its center. Buffets of this scale are the great all-rounders of French furnishing: a dining room server, an entrance hall anchor, or handsome storage in a bedroom. The doors and drawers operate properly, with wear consistent with two centuries of use.
