French Turned Beech Coffee Table, Louis XIII Style, 1950s

A French coffee table in beech, 1950s, made in the Louis XIII taste with boldly bobbin-turned legs joined by a matching turned H-stretcher. The rectangular top sits above a gently shaped apron, and the rhythmic ball turnings give the piece far more sculptural interest than its modest size suggests. Low tables in this style were a French mid-century favorite, translating a great 17th century vocabulary into the scale of modern living rooms, and they remain endlessly useful: in front of a small sofa, between a pair of armchairs, or as a generous side table. The warm brown beech carries an even, mellow patina. Sturdy and ready for daily use, with wear consistent with age.
