An Italian walnut credenza, circa 1700. The well-proportioned façade is organized in five bays: two central drawers with recessed panel ornament sit above two corresponding central doors, while single drawers and doors flank each side. Pilasters frame the façade at the outer edges, lending an architectural formality consistent with the Italian cabinetmaking tradition of the period, in which furniture was conceived as an extension of interior architecture. The walnut is of good quality, the grain and figure of the wood playing an active role in the decorative composition of each panel. The surface has developed a deep, warm patina over more than three centuries of use. A substantial and well-constructed Italian credenza, suitable for a dining room, library, or formal living room. 72.8"W × 20.9"D × 42.5"H.
