An Italian Baroque cabinet of two-part construction, circa 1760, presenting a striking black exterior and blue-painted interior. The two-part form — consisting of a lower cabinet base and an upper section — was a standard configuration for significant Italian storage furniture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, allowing for ease of transport and installation in grand interiors. The current black exterior finish is a later repainting over the original surface, a common practice in Italian case furniture across the centuries, and has developed a well-aged character of its own. The contrasting blue interior provides visual depth upon opening. A bold and characterful piece suited to a library, study, or dramatic living room context.
