An Italian walnut credenza, nineteenth century. The central façade presents a long drawer above a pair of double doors opening to inner shelves. The canted sides each incorporate a single drawer above a door, a configuration that makes practical use of the angled corners while contributing to the elegant silhouette characteristic of Italian credenze with canted sides. Three drawers in total. Bracket feet support the base. The walnut is dark and warm, the surface enriched by more than a century of wax and use. The canted-side credenza form was well established in Italian cabinetmaking by the nineteenth century, the angled sides softening what might otherwise be a purely rectangular composition and adding visual refinement. A well-proportioned and generously scaled Italian provincial credenza. 67.3"W × 21.7"D × 38.6"H.
