An Italian Baroque painted buffet, early seventeenth century. The rectangular top with beveled edges sits above two doors carved with vertical diamond point motifs — a decorative device with deep roots in Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture and furniture, where the faceted diamond pattern was employed as a bold, sculptural surface treatment. The doors open via turned wooden pulls to a simple interior with a single shelf. The piece is raised on a plinth base with bracket feet at the front. The sides are plain; the back unfinished, as expected of period Italian case furniture. The painted surface has developed a deeply weathered patina over four centuries, the paint layers carrying a worn, encrusted character that is impossible to artificially replicate. A rare and exceptionally early example of Italian provincial case furniture. 53.25"W × 24.8"D × 38.25"H.
